RESUMO

In the present study, the biochemical responses and antioxidant enzymes activity of the Dunaliella salina, a green microalga, to the interaction of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and salicylic acid (SA) were investigated. Algal suspensions in the phase of logarithmic growth were subjected to the concentrations of 0, 5, 15, and 25 pM AgNPs with or without 1 mM SA. AgNPs level of 25 pM declined cell division but highly accumulated levels of chlorophyll, ß-carotene, proteins, free amino acid, carbohydrates, and hydrogen peroxide, which was associated with enhanced the activity of proteolysis, lipid peroxidation, and antioxidant enzymes. SA-treated cells at 25 pM AgNPs improved cell growth but declined the activities of antioxidant enzymes and proteolytic along with a lower accumulation of metabolites except ß-carotene relative to untreated controls. These results suggest that AgNPs treatment induce oxidative stress in D. salina cells, which tolerated by alga through the metabolic modifications and accumulating ß-carotene, while SA induces AgNPs tolerance by the mechanisms that direct carbon flux to growth and ß-carotene biosynthesis rather than the antioxidant enzymes or osmoprotectant metabolites.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to evaluate the histopathological effects of septoplasty techniques on the nasal septal mucosa of rabbits with light and electron microscope. METHODS: The study was performed on 21 rabbits between August 2016 and February 2017. Rabbits were randomly divided into three groups. In Group-1, while preserving the L-strut structure of the septum, cartilage resection, was performed by open technique septoplasty. In Group-2, the same procedure was done except the resected cartilage was crushed and put back in place. No surgical procedure was performed on the Control group. Postoperative 2nd month; the specimens were histopathologically evaluated by light and electron microscope in terms of changes in the morphology of septum mucosa, perichondrial thickness, cilia and goblet cell deprivation, loss in glands, fibrosis and inflammatory cell infiltration in the lamina propria. RESULTS: The deprivation in cilia, goblet cells, serous gland and increase in the amount of collagen fibers were examined in both Group-1 and 2. The difference in Group-1 and Group-2 were statistically significant in terms of presence of cilia, number of goblet cells and glands and increase in collagen fibers when compared to control (p < 0.001, p = 0.002, p = 0.020, p = 0.002, respectively). In terms of perichondrium thickness, statistically significant difference was found between the Control and Group-2 (p < 0.001). CONCLUSiON: In this study, histopathological findings supported that the presence of cartilage in the septum is necessary to prevent the mucosal changes. Long-term studies are needed to observe whether changes in the morphology of epithelium and gland proceed more than 2 months follow-up.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of hyperbaric oxygen and systemic ozone, used separately and in combination, on the healing of bone defects. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Sixty male Wistar rats were divided into 4 groups (n = 15) according to treatment (control, hyperbaric oxygen [HBO], ozone [O], and HBO plus O [HBO-O]) and divided further into 3 subgroups according to day of sacrifice (postsurgical days 5, 15, and 30). Surgery was performed under general anesthesia to create a critical-size bone defect (5 mm in diameter) in the cranium. After sacrifice, microtomographic images of all samples were recorded, and histomorphometric analysis was performed. RESULTS: Histologic and radiologic measurements showed that the values of all experimental groups were higher than those of the control group. Histologic scores for all experimental groups were statistically higher than those for the control group day 30 (O, P = .045; HBO, P = .049; HBO-O, P = .042). Histologic scores also were statistically higher for the HBO group on day 5 (P = .045) and day 15 (P = .009) compared with the control group. Microtomographic scores were higher for the experimental groups than for the control group, with statistically significant differences for group O on day 5 (P = .033) and day 30 (P = .0045) and for group HBO on day 15 (P = .005). Histologic and radiologic analyses showed positive correlations. CONCLUSION: Within the limitations of this study, the use of hyperbaric oxygen and ozone, separately and in combination, were shown to be effective in increasing bone healing. Combined usage was no more effective in stimulating bone healing than separate usage.
